How Hochfeld is a major line on the Goldfoot Tree

Nadene Goldfoot

Helen Hochfeld b: June 6, 1909 in Spokane, Washington
d: July 9, 1991 in Portland, Oregon
Helen was literate in Hebrew.

She was the niece of Rabbi Naftula Gertz Hochfeld born 1879
from Ukraine, a Chassidic Rabbi
Rabbi Chaim David Hochfeld (1829-1904)   was her grandfather
Being Helen has 2 Rabbis in her genealogy, I wanted to find out more about Rabbi naftula Gerts Hochfeld and found the daughter of a 3rd Hochfeld rabbi.

Dina Hochfeld – the daughter of Bina'le the leader, married Rabbi Yaakov Hochfeld, one of the greatest merchants in 18th century Rovno who was known as Yaakov–Luyba. She excelled in generosity and her palm was open to charity and helping all the needy. Hochfeld's shop was called “Dipo” and among other stories, they say that when a client came to the store and whispered to her that he was in dire straits and he can't pay his debt, she consoled him and ordered to sell him more merchandise on credit, so that he won't leave empty handed and could go on working and make a living until God would help him and his situation improved. There was no charity institution that did not have Dina Hochfeld as a contributor and she was active in many establishments with all her heart. She died in Rovno at the age of 76 and left three daughters who became famous as well. They are: Friedel, the wife of Rabbi Shimshon Lemlech; Yentel, the wife of Rabbi Meir Manson and Manya – the wife of Rabbi Brish Shatz. The big commerce house and all the family's property went to the three daughters, they were, too, women of valor who were generous and benevolent all their lives. Rovno sung many praises about the three families, especially about Yentel Manson, who surpassed her sisters with her contributions and help to the needy, the sick, the orphan and to the poor until the end of her life.

Rovno is in Western Ukraine.  On 6 November 1941, about 21,000 Jews were massacred by Einsatzgruppe C and their Ukrainian collaborators. The remaining Jews were imprisoned in the ghetto. In July 1942, all remaining 5,000 Jews were trucked to a stone quarry near Kostopol and murdered there.  The ghetto was liquidated on July 13, 1942. Only a handful of Jews managed to escape deportation.

Below: my cousin Nate, myself and Uncle Charlie

Charles "Khaskel" Goldfoot b: September 26, 1906 in Council, Washington
My father, Maurice Goldfoot, had an older brother, Charlie.  He married Helen Hochfeld on July 11, 1929 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon on the West Coast of the United States.  They were some of the first people to live out on the West Coast.  Most Jews were living in the East at this time, remaining in New York City where so many had landed from Europe.
Cousins Nate Goldfoot on left, son of Charlie, and Herb Hochfeld on right
with Herb's daughter, Barbara in middle.  Herb has taken DNA tests showing he is a Cohen, and has been one in the synagogue, knowing this fact
before DNA, all his life.  That means that ha Cohen ( the Cohen) on many Hochfeld surnames is there for this reason.
Nate and Herb are 2nd cousins.

I'm Nate's 1st cousin.  It's interesting to know that Herb and I are 5th cousins to remote: and share 27 segments  totaling 92cMs on
chromosomes # 1 of 6.02cMs;  #6 of 5.25cMs;  #8 of 6.74cMs;  #9 of 7.78cMs and  #15 of 5.75cMs.  Eleven of us match Herb with segments of 5 and more.  One had a segment of 16.2cMs.  I have not found "HOCHFELD" on our tree other than the connection of my Uncle Charlie marrying Helen Hochfeld.  Our history has been with Telsiai (Telz), Lithuania while the Hochfelds' history has been in the Ukraine.  Go figure. We Jews connect somehow-somewhere, with Ashkenazi being Germany.
 Read more about Herb below.

Helen's father was William Hochfeld, born in 1882 in Kiev, Ukraine, Russian Empire.  Ukraine was the home of Hassidism.

Hasidism, sometimes spelled Chassidism, and also known as Hasidic Judaism, is a Jewish religious group that arose as a spiritual revival movement in the territory of contemporary Western Ukraine during the 18th century, and spread rapidly throughout Eastern Europe.  Israel Ben Eliezer, the "Baal Shem Tov", is regarded as its founding father, and his disciples developed and disseminated it.
This family will soon find another rabbi of their own family line;  Rabbi Naftula Gertz Hochfeld, son of David Hochfeld and his 2nd wife, Beila Halperin or maybe 1st wife, Rokhel Kovishaner from Kishinev, Kiev, Bessarabia,  Ukraine, Russian Empire.

He settled in Grand Coulee, Grant, Washington and built a department store there where he and his sons and daughter and even my Uncle Charlie worked.  Helen's mother was Francis Cuschner, born in 1887 in Bismark, Burleigh, North Dakota.  Her family were one of those Jews who tried to be farmers there and lived in a community of other Jews, but it didn't pan out.

H. David Hochfeld
Sept 24, 1829-April 5, 1904

William's father was  Rabbi   Harry Herbert Chaim David Hochfeld born 1830 in Belaya Tserkov, Kiev, Ukraine, Russian Empire.   Belaya Tserkov is a town of importance, caught in the massacres that occurred in Ukraine from 1593 to 1657 called the Chmielnicki Massacres when the native population went wild and killed most all the Jews living there.  He immigrated to the States June 01 - 28, 1892.  At the same time from 1880 on, Jews from Russia were making aliyah to Palestine.
Update:5/29/22
Helen's grandfather, below, was the subject of a study done by    , "Dr. Jeffrey Mark Paull, Dr. Jeffrey Briskman, Susan Steeble, Rabbi Shmiel Gruber, who were researching genealogy of HOCHFELD family from Belaya Tzerkov (Kiev region, Ukraine) and later from Kishinev (Bessarabia, now Moldova).

This Hochfeld family members are direct paternal descendants of famous Rabbi Naftula Gertz ha-Cohen (1725-1797) of Belaya Tzerkov.
Rabbi Naftula Gertz had at least 6 sons (all of them adopted different surnames), and we are looking for their paternal descendants in order to establish the genetic signature of the Rabbi.
So far we have located one such descendant from OSTROVSKY branch. "

                             Rabbi Chaim David Hochfeld (1829-1904)
great grandfather to Herb Hochfeld and grandfather to Helen Hochfeld.
Helen read Hebrew. So does Herb.
Rabbi Chaim David was following in the footsteps of ancestor
6 generations before him, Naphtali "Gertz"Ha Cohen Hochfeld

Another one, again with the sign of Cohen.       The pe (po) and the nun (nikbar), abb. of here

was buried:  an important man

My uncle Charlie, born in 1906 in Portland, died at an early age in 1949 from smoking which caused great coughing spells.  My father drove up to Grand Coulee  in December for the funeral and brought back cousin Nate to live with us.  Nate returned a while later to Grand Coulee and graduated from his old high school there.
Nate with cousin Donnie at one of our get-togethers.

Nate, recently deceased as of April 2020,  had a 2nd cousin in Portland that he barely knew about.  It is Herb Hochfeld born in Portland, Oregon.  Herb's father was  Frank Burrick Hochfeld b: Ukraine, Russia.

Frank's father was Simon Solomon Samuel Hochfeld born in 1855 in Lutsk, Ukraine, Russia.

Simon Hochfeld's father was Harry Herbert Chaim David Hochfeld born 1830 in Belaya Tserkov, Kiev, Ukraine, Russia.   Belaya Tserkov is a town of importance, caught in the massacres that occurred in Ukraine from 1593 to 1657 called the Chmielnicki Massacres when the native population went wild and killed most all the Jews living there.

Helen had two brothers.
Benjamin Herbert Hochfeld was born in 1910, the year after Helen.  He wound up in Illinois and had 2 boys and a girl, William Leslie Hochfeld in 1944,
Barbara Karen "Billie" in 1947, and Norman Barry Hochfeld in 1953.  Norman died in Illinois a few years ago.

Robert Raymond, called Bob Hochfeld, was born in 1916.  They were all born in Yakima, Washington.  He moved to California where he died.  He had 2 girls and a boy.  The boy lives in Portland, Oregon now and will be participating in a DNA test of the Hochfelds. He's an only living relative of Hochfelds that go back to the 1600s on my tree.

Harry Herbert Chaim David Hochfeld's ancestors are as follows that I have had help in getting for Norman Hochfeld several years ago.

"From the 15th century onward, Jewish Sephardi merchants from Constantinople frequented Bessarabia while using the trade route which crossed the length of the territory, connecting the countries of the East and the Black Sea shores with Poland. Later, Jewish merchants from Poland also began coming to Bessarabia. Some of them settled there, thus laying the foundation of the first Jewish communities in northern and central Bessarabia; in southern Bessarabia Jewish communities were found already in the 16th century. By the early 18th century, permanent Jewish settlements had been established in several commercial centers. Toward the end of the century, relatively large numbers of Jews were living in most of the urban settlements and in many villages. Their number was estimated at 20,000 in 1812"

1. Simcha Levi Hochfeld b: 1810 in Kishinev, Bessarabia (wonder why he left Ukraine?)  Today Bessarabia is within the lands of Moldova and Ukraine.
  2. Chaim Moshe Hochfeld b: about 1790
     3. Aaron Schmuel Hochfeld b: about 1779
        4. Naphtali Hertz Hochfeld  b: about 1750
            5. Chaim Ben Shmuelki Hochfeld  b: about 1725
               6. Naphtali Ha Cohen Hochfeld  b: about 1700
                  7. Isaac Ben Cohen Hochfeld  b: about 1679
                      8. Isaac Ben Naphtali Ha Cohen Hochfeld b: about 1655

Another pogrom had happened in "Chisinau, Bessarabia in April 1903. Another struck again in 1905.  This town was the Jerusalem of Bessarabia, the capital.   At the beginning of the 20th century, the capital of Bessarabia – the historical region which coincides with today's Moldova and part of Romania and the Ukraine, around the delta of the Danube – counted 70 synagogues and a dozen Jewish schools. And they were always full. Roughly half of the inhabitants of Chişinău were Jews, the calendar of Jewish holidays marked the city's life, and Yiddish was the second language after Romanian."

"The first pogrom was unleashed by a hoax. The Bessarabets, a Russian-language newspaper, published the news of a young Christian killed for a non-existent Jewish ritual, the blood libel. It was enough to sparkle a thirst for blood that blinded the people. Jews were hunted down house by house, women and children were stabbed in their beds, the rabbis killed on the street with sticks, synagogues burned, homes looted."

Most likely they all are from Ukraine.
Now Jeffrey Briskman, Phd and Jeffrey Paull, Phd. are the genealogists/geneticists working on this line.

My recent searches show that my brother, David, is 3rd cousin to Herb Hochfeld but I am a 5th cousin.  This proves how we siblings have our own set of DNA that we inherit; much of which is exactly like our siblings, but a few turn out to be different from each other.  It may be a matter of chance, or sometimes I think our sex determines some of it; as it does for the 23rd chromosome; the sex chromosome.  I've found that my brother, David Goldfoot, cousin Sandra Oster,  and my 3rd cousin Andi Ziegalman, are all 3rd-5th cousins to Herb whle Rebecca Rubenstein was a 2nd to 4th cousin of his.
Sandra, Andi and Herb triangulated on chromosome #1.
David, Sandra and Herb triangulated on #8 and on #12.
This means that they had a common ancestor..

David's 3rd cousin relationship brings us to finding the common ancestor of Herb and David to be:

This Harry/Herbert David Hochfeld had immigrated to the states June 1892 from Hamburg to USA on the ship, Leiceser.  That's about when my grandfather, Nahum/Nathan immigrated as well, but I doubt if they had met.  My grandfather, Nathan Abraham, came via Lithuania to England, then Ireland, Canada and then USA.  June 1893 found on the ship, Parisian arriving on this date. He was on a Canadian Passenger list as Goldfort.

We see that Herbert Hocheld, 3rd to 5th cousin to Sandra Oster and David Goldfoot, is Great Grandnephew to Rabbi Naftula Gertz Hochfeld of Ukraine above.

My aunt Helen Goldfoot nee Hochfeld was the niece of this Hassidic Rabbi.

Update:  Herbert Hochfeld passed away on February 12, 2021 in the evening of Portland's largest snowstorm. He was 98 years, 1 month and 13 days old.  As a Cohen, he had attending synagogue every Shabbas to read from the Torah.  Herb was  in the army during WWII stationed in France.

"Approximately one third of the passengers who departed Hamburg were from Germany, while nearly two thirds came from Eastern Europe, especially in the period from 1880-1914. Among these were approximately 1.2 million people from Russia, Austria-Hungary, Romania, and other countries of southeastern Europe. The records also include about 750,000 Jewish immigrants from Russia, who sailed at this time from Hamburg to the United States."

Hochfeld is a surname with its origin in Germany, just like Goldfoot was originally Goldfus, starting in Germany.  In fact, there was a town of Hochfeld, and now there is the suburb, Hochfeld of the city of Duisburg, Germany.  They have this in common.  I have found a German rabbi:  Rabbi Samson Hochfeld born July 21, 1872 in Hoxter.  He died August 10, 1921 in Berlin at age 49.

Don Rickles, the comedian, remember him?  He's related to the Portland Hochfelds.  Donald Jay Rickles was an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, known especially for his insult comedy. His film roles included Run Silent, Run Deep with Clark Gable and Kelly's Heroes with Clint Eastwood; beginning in 1976, he enjoyed a two-year run starring in the NBC television sitcom C.P.O. Sharkey

Don's father was Abraham Rickles who came from Odessa, Ukraine, Russian Empire.  He immigrated in 1900 to Portland and became a Grant High teacher in the 30s on , and then retired in Los Angeles, CA.  Abe must have had a brother, P.Allen Rickels whose on was George Lucius Rickles who married Shirley Hochfeld, b: 1929.  Shirley was the daughter of Mendel Moe Hochfeld.
Further investigation tells me there were 2 Don Rickles, ancestors both Russian Jews but other one (Comedian-Don Jay Rickles ancestors from Kaunas, Lithuania) No wonder I go crazy!   The comedian, Don Rickles' father was said to be a Max Rickles and mother was Etta Feldman.

But....
Shirley Hochfeld's b: 1929 Portland, OR  husband was George Lucius Rickles:  George L. 84 12/11/1925 10/01/2010 George Rickles, the man in charge of all ticket sales for the Portland Buckaroos and the first 20 years of the Portland Trail Blazers franchise, died peacefully Oct. 1, 2010. George grew up in Seattle, where his father, an attorney, was presi-dent of his synagogue and a leader of the Anti-Defamation League. George was Vice President of the Trail Blazers.  Pretty good for a Portland native.  He's buried at Willamette National Cemetery; was in the Navy in WWII.
